Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled the much-anticipated India Rankings 2024, highlighting the nation’s premier educational institutions. This year marked the ninth consecutive release of these rankings, which are determined by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) established in 2015 by the Ministry of Education.
A notable expansion in this year’s rankings included the introduction of three new categories: State Public Universities, Open Universities, and Skill Universities. Additionally, innovation was integrated as a key ranking criterion. With these additions, the total number of categories assessed rose to sixteen.
The rankings cover a wide spectrum of institutions, including universities, colleges, research institutions, and specialized domains like engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, medicine, law, dentistry, and agriculture.
Key Highlights of NIRF Ranking 2024
- IIT Madras maintained its top position in the overall category and engineering domain for the sixth and ninth consecutive years, respectively.
- IISc Bangalore secured the top spot in the Universities category for the ninth year and led the Research Institutions category for the fourth consecutive year.
- IIM Ahmedabad retained its dominance in the management category for the fifth straight year.
- AIIMS New Delhi clinched the top position in the medical category for the seventh consecutive year and improved its overall ranking to seventh.
- Jamia Hamdard emerged as the top-ranked institution in pharmacy.
- Hindu College surpassed Miranda House to claim the top spot among colleges for the first time.
- IIT Roorkee continued its leadership in architecture and planning.
- National Law School of India University, Bengaluru maintained its top position in the law category.
- Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai led the dental category for the third consecutive year.
- Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi retained its top rank in agriculture and allied sectors.
The rankings also introduced new categories, with Anna University, Chennai topping State Public Universities, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) leading Open Universities, IIT Kanpur excelling in Innovation, and Symbiosis Skill and Professional University (SSPU), Pune emerging as the top Skill University.
